Hogarth School

Summer 2010

The long summer vacation breaks the rhythm of instruction, leads to forgetting, and requires a significant amount of review of material when students return to school in the fall. Harris Cooper  (Click here to read the entire article.)

Let the friends, fun and learning continue this summer at Hogarth! I will be offering a 6-week summer session specifically designed to avoid “summer slide,” that phenomenon in which children lose hard-won skills acquired during the academic year.

This summer, the children will engage in structured play situations that will allow them to maintain and sharpen the following skills:

·         listening abilities

·         following directions

·         alphabet (sight and sound letter recognition)

·         number (sight recognition and number concepts of 0 through 10, and 11 through 20, if appropriate)

·         shapes (sight recognition of circle, square, triangle, rectangle, diamond and oval)

·         fine motor (handwriting, cutting with scissors)

·         social (sharing, taking turns, peer compromise, perspective-taking, emotional self-control and mind-reading, which allows a child to decode another child’s intentions and anticipate another’s child’s actions and reactions)

The importance of developing good social skills during the preschool phase of a child’s life cannot be overemphasized. Social skills are the key to successful interactions throughout a person’s life, not just during childhood. A child who cannot make a place for him or herself within the social structure of his or her peer group is a child at risk of a miserable school experience. Children learning to initiate and maintain social relationships need ongoing real-life opportunities to practice and perfect those skills. The HCDS summer session will allow a child to maintain and build upon those skills developed over the course of the school year. (Click here for an interesting article about preschool social development.)

Here are the nuts and bolts details about the program:

·         Meets Monday and Tuesday mornings from 8:30 until 11:30 in our air-conditioned classroom.

·         Session runs 6 weeks from June 14th through July 20th.

·         Session open to 14 children who attended HCDS from September 2008 through May 2010.

·         Cost for the entire session is $300 and payment in full is due by Friday, June 11th. There is no registration fee. Enrollment is for the entire 6 week session. There are no refunds for days not attended.

Enrollment is done on a first-come, first-enrolled basis, and I will be filling the class list in the order enrollment requests are received, either by e-mail or over the phone. You can call me at home at 679-8409 with any questions you might have, or with your intention to enroll for the summer session.
